(01) Our purpose

Some things are hard to say. They still deserve space.

Two women in conversation in a warm, plant-filled living room — one speaking, the other listening closely.
Being heard

SPADE Mental Health exists to break the silence around mental health in the African American community — through grounded conversation, culture, and shared vulnerability.

For too long, these struggles have been carried quietly, behind stigma and shame. We make room for the things that are hard to say — at the kitchen table, in the barbershop, between friends and across generations. Through honest stories, meaningful resources, and a community that shows up for each other, we help people speak their truth and find their way toward healing.

What SPADE stands for

  1. Suicide

Breaking the silence around suicidal thoughts and creating space for hope.

  2. PTSD

Healing from trauma that lingers in our minds and bodies.

  3. Anxiety

Facing overwhelming worries and fears with compassion, understanding, and tools for inner calm.

  4. Depression

Confronting the shadows and reclaiming joy, purpose, and light.

  5. Epilepsy

Raising awareness and supporting those living with neurological and mental health challenges.

Together, these letters form SPADE — a reminder that while these battles are real, they do not define us. With faith, tools, and community, we can move from struggle toward peace.

(02) Meet the founder

Paul Anthony Henderson Jr.

Founder · SPADE Mental Health

Once hidden in shame. Now worn as a badge of honor.

Paul Anthony Henderson Jr. was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, and raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina. In 2004, during his ninth-grade year, Anthony was diagnosed with epilepsy after experiencing a series of seizures that changed his life forever. One unforgettable day in band class led to a cascade of episodes, including a grand mal seizure that landed him in the hospital and marked the beginning of his journey with epilepsy.

Living with seizures and the effects of medication — like short-term memory loss — was once something Anthony hid in shame. Today, he wears it as a badge of honor. He embraces his identity as an epileptic warrior, using his platform to share his truth, inspire resilience, and create space for conversations that often go unheard.

    Carry It Different

You check on everybody. But who checks on you?

As men, we carry the pressure to succeed, provide, meet expectations, and keep moving forward. But what happens when that weight starts affecting us in ways we don’t talk about?

Carry It Different is a four-part masterclass presented by SPADE Mental Health that explores:

    1. 01 The pressures men face
    2. 02 How those pressures show up in everyday life
    3. 03 The importance of genuine connection
    4. 04 When to seek additional support

Because being strong doesn’t mean carrying everything alone.
